Este documentário da série BBC Horizon demonstra as evidências da teoria e de como a vida - até então composta apenas por ciano bactérias e algas - pôde sobreviver em tais condições adversas.

Embora um grande número de objeções tenham sido levantadas contra esta tese, há ainda um bom número de cientistas na comunidade que aceitam que algum nível de “efeito” Bola-de-Neve ocorreu na era geológica abordada.

Simples e objetivamente, as teorias são explicadas com humor e imagens competentes e, embora os cientistas não concordem ainda sobre o tema, é uma excelente oportunidade para se aprender como a ciência é feita e conhecer alguns detalhes do processo científico.

This 2001 BBC Horizon documentary shows the evidences for the theory and how life - by the time only cyan bacteria and algae - could survive under such harsh conditions.

Although a great number of objections have been raised against the theory, there are still a number of scientists who agree some level of “snowball earth” effect occurred on the geological time covered.

Simple yet objective, the theories are explained with humor and a competent footage, and, although the scientists don’t agree yet about the theme, it’s a decent insight in how science is made and how the scientific process work.

O primeiro episódio “More Human Than Human” (Mais Humano Que Humano) é irretocável. Uma delícia de assistir. Apresentado com humor e grandes doses de informação que continham surpresas até para mim, que estudei História da Arte por anos.

A partir daí, o vício maldito da academia de fazer os fatos servirem à teoria toma conta. Cada episódio tem pelo menos um momento onde você quer discutir com o script. Por exemplo, ele deixa implícito que o desejo de criar imagens levou ao desenvolvimento da agricultura. Como se alguém pudesse dizer: “Queremos pintar mais, quem sabe a gente faz o inimaginável: ao invés de ir atrás dos grãos vamos jogá-los no chão na época certa e eles vão crescer.”, obviamente o caminho é o contrário – a influência econômica da recém descoberta agricultura – a capacidade de produzir mais comida com o mesmo esforço – liberou mão-de-obra para criar mais imagens.

Para espectadores implicantes a nota é 8 de 10, para pessoas normais provavelmente 9 de 10. Belíssimas imagens, humor, informação até cansar e um dom para explicar didaticamente conceitos complexos. É uma ótima escolha para a coleção de um professor de Arte ou Educação Artística e para todos que se interessam pelo assunto. Apenas em inglês.

A series of documentaries, presented by Nigel Spivey - Cambridge professor. The theory underlying the series is that not only we make art because we are human, but we are human because of art. There is an important shift of focus there which makes and breaks the show. The first episode “More Human Than Human” is irreproachable. A delight to view. Presented with humor and astounding amounts of information that had surprises even for me, someone who has studied Art History for years.

From then on the dreaded academic vice of making the data fit the theory sets on. Every episode from here to the last has at least one moment where you want to argue with the script. For instance he implies that the desire to create images led to the development of agriculture as if someone could say: “Oh, we want to paint more, let’s invent the unthinkable, instead of going after the grain we will throw it in the ground at the right time of the year and it will grow.”, obviously it’s the other way around: the economic influence of the recently discovered agriculture - being able to get much more food with the same effort - liberated workforce to create more or better images.

For picky viewers it’s a 8 of 10, for normal people, probably a 9 of 10. Beautiful images, humor, plenty of facts, lots of great didactic ways to show difficult concepts. Makes a great addition to an art teacher or art enthusiast collection.

In 1939, Commodore Henry Harwood commanded a small fleet of three cruiser ships in pursuit of the Admiral Graf Spee - the pride of German Navy - issued months before the start of World War II to patrol and attack allies’ ships on the shores of South America.

A very touching story about the sinking of Graf Spee, the most impressive pocket battleship at his time, this documentary was based on the letters and ship logs wrote both by the German and the British captains and testimonials of survivors of both sides involved in this nerves battle.

After sinking several British merchant ships Graf Spee is caught in a battle with three Royal Navy cruisers in the middle of the South Atlantic. Even have beating her three attackers the ship was badly damaged, and she set sails to Montevideo, the nearest seaport around for repair. The subsequent events are surprisingly moving. A history of how you, even fighting along the wrong guys, can be a decent human being and a soldier of honor.

Em 1939, alguns meses depois de ser lançado ao mar com o objetivo explícito de afundar qualquer navio mercante britânico assim que a guerra fosse declarada, o Graf Spee, a melhor nave de combate alemã na época, depara-se com uma flotilha de três cruzadores ingleses mandada pessoalmente por Churchill em sua caça nas águas do Atlântico Sul. Uma curta batalha em que dois navios da Royal Navy e o próprio Graf Spee são bastante avariados leva o almirante alemão Langsdorff a procurar um porto seguro para reparos em Montevideo, Uruguay, à época um país neutro no conflito.

Baseado em testemunhos de sobreviventes dos dois lados, imagens da época e nos diários de bordo e na correspondência pessoal dos dois capitães inimigos, Langsdorff e Harwood.

A partir de um estratagema e um blefe diplomático, os ingleses induzem a batalha a um desfecho surpreendente e bastante tocante. Sem apologias ou condescendências com os nazistas, esse documentário mostra como, mesmo lutando do lado errado, um sujeito como Langsdorff foi capaz de se mostrar um homem decente e honrado, naquela que foi a primeira vitória inglesa na Segunda Guerra Mundial.

We would be better off with less sentimentalism, but this is still an astonishing beautiful documentary about migrating birds. The narrative, always showing the birds view is beautifully illustrated by a handful of flying birds footage and some scarce data from the human narrator. Some scenes are among the most spectacular you will ever see on a documentary, namely those ones shot accompanying the migrating birds as a part of the migrating herd.

Fomos ver no domingo, na sessão popular do Unibanco Artplex no Frei Caneca, o tal “Migração Alada” ou “Winged Migration” do francês Jacques Perrin, o mesmo de Microcosmos e Le Peuple Singe. Dá pra suspeitar que o sujeito não gosta de foi gras, de tantas imagens fenomenais de bandos de gansos voando.

A seqüência inicial do filme, apesar de, talvez, apelar um pouco para um sentimentalismo barato, é capaz de arrancar lágrimas do mais desalmado dos materialistas (meu caso). A narração espartana, quase inexistente, tem mesmo pouca função diante das imagens. Não consigo imaginar outro filme que tenha dado tanto trabalho pra ser produzido e editado, apesar da decepção de não ver cumprida a promessa de que as imagens seriam de aves de todos os continentes. Afora algumas imagens de pingüins, algumas araras amazônicas e aves africanas e japonesas “exóticas”, muito pouco foi filmado fora do eixo Atlântico Norte. Nada de biguás e cormorões, nada de flamingos do Lago Titicaca, nada de andorinhas azuis, que, como nós, do Hemisfério Sul, também são migrantes de segunda classe, parece.

Em poucas cenas aparecem seres humanos, que, do ponto de vista grandioso da narração, são mesmo dispensáveis. Mas as cenas onde aparece gente são as mais tocantes, lacrimosas, rasteiras ou poéticas, dependendo do ponto de vista do espectador. Ver uma versão báltica da minha avó oferecendo sementes de girassol a um bando de cegonhas exaustas voltando do ártico é mais uma das cenas que não esquecerei enquanto a memória não me falhar. Gostei tanto desse filme que não vou recomendá-lo pra ninguém, como bom ex-comunista. Se eu tivesse realizado, participado da filmagem, editado ou produzido esse, já me daria por satisfeito na vida e voltava pra minha vila, no século 16, de onde nunca deveria ter saído. E diria: Missão cumprida, vovó, pra depois comer a ambrosia que ela sempre ofereceu aos recém-chegados de quem gostasse.
